Susapian Romance by Rebekah Walton
Here is my essay on the romance:
Susapian romance (the romance that is not to be named)
It may seem like a little thing to some, but to the true fans of Narnia this was a big issue.
In the movie that has recently come out, they have taken a perfectly good friendship and changed it to a romantic relationship which not only ruins the whole story but also possibly all the books in this series. It should be quite obviously to most what movie I am speaking of. Prince Caspian should not have had a romance in the movie between Susan and Caspian. There are three basic reasons why they shouldn’t have done this one because of the problems between fans, two for the real romance, and three for the new movie.
Firstly, Susapian romance should have never occurred because it created problems in the fan realm. Many fans thought this whole romance was revolting and could not bear to watch it. Others became fans of this romance and grew to dislike Ramandu’s daughter. Thus, fanfiction has hundreds of stories about that and how Susan and Caspian finally got together. Of these fans a number of them get over it by reading Dawn Treader or watching it but the heartache that this caused is still there. All these problems occurred because of the Susapian romance in the fan realm.
Secondly, Susapian romance should have never occurred because it created problems for the character Caspian which he never had in the books. Three years pass between the time the Pevensies leave Narnia and the time Edmund and Lucy with their cousin Eustace come to Narnia again, so, that gives Caspian three years to get over Susan.
You might think that is enough time but you are wrong. Most romance stories give about 10 years to the person to get over romantic feeling for the other person and even then they haven’t even gotten over it. So, eventhough Caspian could potentially get over Susan in three years, will the audience believe it? If not, the audience will think Caspian is very fickle, when he meets Ramandu’s daughter for the first time and falls in love with her.
Which in general would ruin Caspian’s whole character. He would have to show to he really loves Ramandu’s daughter and there would probably be a kissing scene. Which in the book did not occur simply because Ramandu’s daughter said he could not kiss her until the spell had been broken and the three lords awoke. The second reason why the Susapian romance should have never occurred because of the problems it created in the real romance.
Thirdly and lastly, the Susapian romance should have never occurred because it created several problems for the Voyage of the Dawn Treader movie in general. According to the book Ramandu’s daughter was suppose to be beautiful but she wasn’t compared to Susan or for that matter anyone. When you see a beautiful lady and compare her to another beautiful lady you are going to get different opinions on which lady is the beautiful one, but if you just see a beautiful lady by herself and don’t compare her to someone else she will be beautiful without different opinions.
Voyage of the Dawn Treader the movie now excludes certain fans from watching the movie because some fans being Susapian fans they cannot bare to watch Caspian and Ramandu’s daughter get together. In the Last Battle, Susan forgets Narnia ever existed.
The fans that did not read the books will think because Susan couldn’t see Caspian again she, like Uncle Andrew, got herself to believe that Narnia was not real, and it was just a game they played when they were younger.
Therefore, instead of her belief having to do with wanting to grow up and devoting her life to things that did not matter as much, her belief in Narnia according to the movie disappears because it hurts too much to think of Caspian when she will never see him again. The last reason why the Susapian romance should have never occurred is because of the problems it created for the next movie Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
In conclusion, the Susapian romance caused problems for the fans, for the real romance between Caspian and Ramandu’s daughter, and for the next movie Voyage of the Dawn Treader. These are only some of the reasons why the Susapian romance should have never existed in the movie. There are many more reasons why this was the worst thing they did to change the Prince Caspian story when they adapted the story to make the movie version.
